Albums of Miranda Sex Garden

Miranda Sex Garden that was a very popular band coming out of London, England in the early 90s and keeping their fans enthused until 2000. The band was officially broken up for five of those years between 1995 and 2000 but they still released five albums that always kept fans asking for more. Each album was extremely unique and as the band changed and evolved, so did their music.

Their first album Madra was released in 1991 and was the collaboration of three girls: Katharine Blake, Jocelyn West, and Kelly McCusker. They stayed true to the theories they had brought with them from Purcell School of Music and created an album that was very serious and a throwback to the 17th century. The album was done in complete a cappella and Katharine wrote the lyrics for most of the songs.

In 1992 Miranda Sex Garden released a mini album titled Iris. On this album, many of the band members had changed and this was very symbolic of how the group’s sound was changing as well. This band turned more towards gothic rock than the music of their first album. The band was louder and their music was much more in-depth.

Suspiria was released in 1993 as Miranda Sex Garden’s third album. The title for the record was taken from a horror movie that revolves around a witch’s coven. The music, to go along with the title, would also greatly fit into any horror movie, all part of the band’s plan. Although the band was the same group of people who released Iris, they still wanted to always be adding to their sound and keep every album with its own unique sound. They believed they had accomplished this with Suspiria.

In 1994, Fairytales of Slavery, the band’s fourth album was released. It was an interesting time for the band with many band member changes and they were also not connecting with their fans as they once were. The album reflected everything that was going on in their career as well as their personal lives. As the band, mainly Katharine Blake, were experimenting with erotic S&M clubs in London and performing at places that were known for sexual activity, the album greatly reflected this as it dealt mainly with the ‘red light zone.’

Carnival of Souls was released in 2000. Although it was the fifth album to be released by the band, it was also created after a five-year separation period of all the band members. This album shows the greatest change in their style of their very early work and remains true to the type of style they used for Fairytales of Slavery.
